Oporto, Portugal

We loved Oporto but only had a day to explore it. We would definitely go back!

Of course we had to visit a port house in Oporto. Port is a wine fortified with brandy. It was created by British merchants a few hundred years back. They added brandy to Portuguese wine during fermentation so that it would survive the export to the UK.

Katie being educated on Port.

Old men playing cards in the park.

A view out to the Douro River.

Another view.

We asked a local which restaurant to go to and he gave us this one; unfortunately I can't remember the name.

Asperagus soup - tastes good, stinky pee though.

Seafood dish, yum!

We totally got this dessert because of the name, see next photo.

Toucinho do Céu (Lard of heaven)

If you go to Oporto and are not a vegetarian, get one of these sandwiches. They are in all the cafés and restaurants. It's the Francesinha which is bread, cured ham, sausage, and steak covered by melted cheese and topped with a hot, thick spicy tomato and beer sauce. As a local told us "the secret is in the sauce."
Donut for the road, we munched on this at the airport on our way out heading back to France to meet up with our friends, Chris and Christine.
